Awarding outstanding students

The College of Natural and Applied Sciences provides many opportunities for you to receive financial assistance to support your studies at Missouri State University. You may also qualify for additional University scholarships. The Office of Student Financial Aid provides information about University scholarships, grants and loans.

Unless noted, all scholarships require at least the submission of the online general scholarship application by March 1. If additional application materials are required, the details are included within the scholarship's description.

Scholarship amounts may vary annually.

Lonnie and Billie Scott Science and Mathematics Education Scholarship

Selection criteria

A single $1,000 scholarship will be awarded annually to an undergraduate student seeking a Bachelor of Science in Education in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences.  The recipient of the award should demonstrate excellence in academics while also being an active member of the community.  Preference should be given to students graduating from Forsyth High School in Forsyth, MO.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Guy Callaway, Sr. Outstanding Senior Premedical Student Scholarship

Value

Generally a single award will be made, but the number of awards is dependent on the availability of funding and quality of candidates.  Awards will always be valued at $1,500.

Application

Complete the General and Departmental Scholarship Application by March 1.

Selection criteria

$1500 awards given annually to the top senior applicant with plans to graduate in the coming academic year and attend medical school the following fall. Must have 60 credit hours completed, and must be on track to graduate within four semesters (not including summer semesters). The student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. Students on track to graduate by the end of the current academic year (generally seniors). All students must submit a resume of their experience in the health-care field that provides significant exposure to practicing physicians (i.e. shadowing, internships, employment, etc.). Students must also submit a resume of their other extracurricular activities. Preference will be given to students that submit a letter of recommendation from their MSU faculty advisor. Ultimately, all students will be evaluated based on academic record, health-care experience, and service and involvement. Leadership will also be required.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

Vijay Pillai Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a student seeking a degree in Agriculture, Animal Science, Biology, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Physics Technology, Environmental Sciences & Policy, Geology, Informatics, Mathematics, Physics. Financial need will be considered. First preference going to incoming freshman from rural backgrounds. Incoming freshman considered based on high school academic performance and a teacher letter of recommendation. Sophomores or higher must have an overall GPA of 3.25. Preference will be for an incoming freshman to receive the entire award, and to continue to receive that award throughout their college career. The scholarship will be renewed automatically as long as the student maintains a cumulative 3.25 GPA.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship is renewed automatically. Automatically renewed as long as the student is an undergraduate as long as they maintain a 3.25 cumulative GPA.

Dr. Roland Kimball Memorial Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time student active in the Pre-Dental program. Student must demonstrate potential in the field of Dentistry as demonstrated through a letter of recommendation from a faculty member in CNAS. Student must have an overall GPA of 2.8 and demonstrate financial need.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal.

Monsanto Company Science and Mathematics Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded to a junior majoring in a program in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences with a departmental GPA of 3.75 enrolled in at least 15 hours. Awards made with regard to financial need.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Dr. John H. Keiser Endowed Scholarship in Public Affairs and Environmental Studies

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time student majoring in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences with an overall GPA of 3.25 and a GPA of 3.5 in their field of study. Student must be seeking a career related to the natural environment. Awarded based on financial need.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Martin-Stevenson Science Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded to a senior science major (not Mathematics) awarded at end of junior year based on outstanding scholastic achievement and financial need. Ineligible if receiving Board of Governor's or Presidential Scholarship.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

Paul L. & Alice W. Redfearn Undergraduate Research Award

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to an undergraduate student majoring in Biology, Geography, or another area of Natural History within the College of Natural and Applied Sciences. Student can be enrolled in graduate courses. Student that conceives an original research project on the natural history of the Ozarks and will receive the award during semester that research will be conducted.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

College of Natural and Applied Sciences Scholarships

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate majoring in a program in College of Natural and Applied Science with an overall GPA of 3.0 and a departmental GPA of 3.5.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Esther H. Scarlett Memorial Ecology Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time graduate student in the College of Natural and Applied Science with a program of study emphasizing ecological concerns. Must have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 and GPA of 3.6 in field of graduate study. Awards made with regard for financial need. Preference given to students that are married with children.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Karen and Bruno Schmidt Scholarship Fund

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time student majoring in a program within the College of Natural and Applied Sciences. Consideration will be given to high school and college academic performance, leadership, and financial need.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Smith-Glynn-Callaway Medical Foundation Premedical Scholarships

Selection criteria

The scholarship selection committee shall award $1000 awards to students with plans to eventually attend medical school. Must have completed and be enrolled in a total of 60 credit hours, and must be on track to graduate within four semesters (not including summer semesters). The student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher. All students must submit a resume of their experience in the health-care field that provides significant exposure to practicing physicians (i.e. shadowing, internships, employment, etc.). Students must also submit a resume of their other extracurricular activities. Preference will be given to those students that submit a letter of recommendation from their MSU faculty advisor. Ultimately, all students will be evaluated based on academic record, health-care experience, and service and involvement.

C. Louis and Thelma Ferrell Van Buren Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time junior or greater enrolled in College of Natural and Applies Science with an overall GPA of 3.0. Awards will be made with regard to financial need and consideration given to students involved in extracurricular activities.

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

The Kunkel Scholarship Fund

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time graduate or undergraduate student seeking a degree in the sciences. First preference will go to students with financial need, particularly those with EFCs and grant aid less than total cost of attendance. Student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0. Student should demonstrate academic excellence, character, and leadership.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship cannot be renewed. 

Women in Science Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate majoring in a program in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences. Must have an overall GPA of 3.0 and a GPA of 3.5 in their field of study.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Dr. Norman Dobson Memorial Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded to a junior or senior or graduate level student majoring in biology, chemistry, physics, material science, industrial management, or biomedical sciences. The student must have maintained an overall GPA of 3.0 and a major GPA of 3.75. Student must be enrolled in 12 hours per semester, and recipient will be selected with regard to financial need.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal. 

Hurtado Family Scholarship

Selection criteria

Awarded annually to a student seeking a major in the College of Natural and Applied Sciences with an overall GPA of 2.0 that demonstrates financial need. First preference will go to students involved in ROTC.

Renewal criteria

This scholarship can be renewed, but students must reapply to be considered for renewal.
