MO Alliance Summer 2020 Research Opportunities

Washington University Summer Engineering Fellowship (WUSEF)

This program will run from May 26-July 28, 2020. It gives students from backgrounds that are underrepresented in STEM fields the opportunity to participate in research at one of the nation’s top universities. Students from mathematics, physical sciences, computer science, and engineering can apply.

If accepted, the student can choose a research project in any discipline and department from the McKelvey School of Engineering. Students will have the option of presenting their research at the Leadership Alliance National Symposium Research Conference and will receive up to $500 to present at another conference after the program ends. There are weekly activities and lunches with faculty members and tours of local companies, like Boeing and Bayer.

Benefits/Stipend

A $5,000 stipend, $120/week stipend for food, free housing, free transportation to and from St. Louis, free preparation for graduate school exams, and passes for public transportation.

Washington University 2020 Summer Research Experience

This program runs from May 26-August 1, 2020. This research program provides faculty-mentored, self-directed work that allows you to explore an area of interest in your discipline and communicate your findings with others. Students will have an opportunity to present their research at both local and national conferences and receive a $4000 stipend. 

Applications are open now and the deadline is mid-February, 2020. Qualified students will have at least 60 credit hours and are majoring in any STEM field with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. A letter of support and personal statement are required.

Benefits/Stipend

A $4,000 stipend with free housing, free GRE preparation, professional development, and mentored research.

University of Missouri MoLSAMP Summer Undergraduate Research

This program runs from June 1-July 31, 2020. This is a full-time program where students will live on campus in Columbia and conduct research. Students will participate in all aspects of the larger summer program at MU including orientation, educational programming, and social events. Students will work on their own research project under the guidance of an MU faculty mentor and will present their results at a poster forum at the end of the program.

This program is open to students majoring in any STEM field. Applicants are expected to have completed at least three semesters of full-time college enrollment prior to June 2020 and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. A letter of endorsement from your MoLSAMP site director (Dr. T) is required.

Benefits/Stipend

Students will live in on-campus air-conditioned housing (double rooms) and receive a meal plan paid by the program. Many programs provide one credit hour for research, travel to and from Columbia, and stipends starting at $3600. The MoLSAMP program at MU also provides a $4000 stipend.

Informational Meeting

If you are interested in applying for any of these REUs, there will be an informational Zoom meeting (video conference) on Tuesday, January 21 at 4PM. The meeting will be around 30 minutes and will go over the REU application process, tips about presenting a competitive application, and navigating the institution's websites to find a faculty mentor. If you would like to join the meeting, please email us at lsamp@missouristate.edu. The meeting will be recorded if you want to see it, but aren't able to join at that time.
